History: History

Personality:
Positive Trait: Empathic

Remy has, over time, become something of an outcast's outcast. He has lost his way multiple times. Lost his home almost as many. When dealing with people whose tagline is about helping a world that "fears and hates them", Remy nearly always knows what they've been through or what they're going through. Not because of his powers, but because he's been there himself. Because of this, he has developed an empathy for those around him that goes far beyond the slight psychic ability he has.

We see it early on in his life, when Remy befriends a young Bella Donna Boudreaux. Though she is surrounded by people who will one day listen to her every order, she's lonely. As a street kid, not yet part of the Thieves' Guild, Remy understands well what that's like. It's a friendship that has changed over the years, through young love, a failed marriage, and a couple attempts on Remy's life. But it has, eventually, settled into a truce, Partly because Remy still understands what Bella's been through better than anybody else.

It also draws him to help those in trouble, especially women and children. A fact that his friends and family are well aware of and very willing to exploit. Tante Mattie, a healer for the Guilds and people of New Orleans, as well as Remy's primary mother figure, once used this to get Remy to help a woman who may actually have been an angel return to where she needed to be to reascend, even though he was very much estranged from the Guilds at the time. Ororo also asked him to speak with Laura, Logan's clone, when she was lost and trying to find where she fit in. She likely realized that Remy was having similar problems after his brush with being the Horseman, Death, and was not surprised in the least when he ended up following Laura on her adventure to find to her footing and her own moral compass. Not just to watch her back, but also be the sounding board she needed to make sense of things in her own mind. Or course, Ororo remembers well herself, back when she had been deaged to about age eleven and came upon Remy while trying to run away from the Shadow King. He helped her out, then kept helping her out, keeping her safe and making sure she had a place to sleep and food to eat. Things that neither of them had had as street children, though he wouldn't know that until much later.

He's been a teacher off and on at the various mutant schools. Because being there for the students is important to him. And being on the front line, defending them in ways that they often haven't been defended by their own families, is one of the best ways he can think of to prove to them that they are worth it. So many of the students are effectively orphaned, he'd like to make sure none of them have to go through what he did when he was their age, as well as making certain there is at least one person who will be there for them, through thick and thin.

He's also one of the first to offer a shoulder or a distraction when things are rough. A few times, when Ororo has felt trapped or at odd ends, he's found a job that they could do together, to take her back to a time when things had been a little simpler for them both. He offered condolences to Rictor when the young man was lost after Apocalypse left Krakoa. Even though he, personally, hates Apocalypse, that didn't matter when Julio needed somebody on his side. That was enough for him to put aside his personal animosity and help out, even if it was just to let Rictor know that he understood.

But, perhaps the greatest show of empathy in Remy's life was racing out to a young woman who just wanted to be touched and love, because her powers made the former impossible. And made her think the latter was impossible as well. A woman who wanted a knight in shining armor on a white steed, but was fine with a thief in a trenchcoat on a Harley. Eventually, at least. Remy knew what it was like, both to have powers that would isolate you from everyone else, but also to feel like nobody would ever want you because of those powers. Or, in his case, because of the way his mutant genes expressed themselves since his birth. He was able to take the lessons that others had taught him and offer it to Rogue, keeping a hand out to her, even when she turned away. Even when he once had to put up a boundary, that while he loved her, she needed to keep her distance from him until she could accept the truth of their love for each other. That while he was her home and harbor, her end game? He couldn't allow her to keep hurting them both with indecision. But, as always, the hand was still there. She just had to accept it.

A hand she eventually did reach back for, accepting that they weren't perfect, but that he was perfect for her. And let him steal a wedding for her. Because it was what they both needed at the time.

Top Negative Trait: Arrogant

To borrow a tagline from another X-Man, Remy is "the best he is at what he does". In his case, what he does is thieving and fighting. He is the leader of the international Thieves' Guild, so there's proof that he's good. And he's been able to hold his own against some of the best hand to hand fighters in the Marvel universe, to the point where he once took over for Daredevil in Hell's Kitchen for a time.

He's good. He knows he's good. And, too often, it means he relies on his skills rather than having a back up plan.

Such as when he got on the bad side of Borya Cich, a man known for bankrolling the plans of costumed bad guys in the Marvel universe. And for taking their tools as repayment when the plan goes wrong. And while he was able to get out of the first scrape with only a little improvisation, it did end with him having a bit of alien technology stuck in his chest. And while he was able to get it out without it killing him, it had put him on Cich's list, which then got him a teleportation device/bomb on his ankle and involved in stealing the entire armory of the British Superhuman Intelligence Agency, or MI-13. While he managed to outwit Cich in the end, it did put him in Pete Wisdom's bad books, as well as on certain lists at Interpol and MI-13.

This trait also has terrible interactions with another negative trait of Remy's: his insecurity. He has a habit of throwing himself onto grenades, partly to prove himself to others and partly because he believes he's the only one who deserves to. When Apocalypse was looking for a new Horseman of Death, Remy volunteered, thinking he was strong enough to resist what the External would do to him. It would give the X-Men somebody on the inside, somebody that could protect them from Apocalypse's eventual betrayal. It didn't work out the way he expected, of course, with some bits of the Death personality still holding on, but buried deep in Remy's mind.

The most recent example of this actually happened just before arriving in Duplicity, where the Knights of X were trapped in the Otherworld and fighting against the forces of Merlyn and an Arthur who had been drawn astray by the wizard's designs. In order to protect the Goblin Market and the people of the Otherworld who were caught in the crossfire, Remy drew the Death card from a magical tarot deck, charged it and used the explosion to buy the other Knights and the people of the Market time to get away, dying in the process. Because if somebody had to die that day, he was the one they could afford to lose.

Negative Trait: Insecure

For somebody so confident, even overconfident, in his own skills, it may be surprising to find that Remy is also incredibly insecure. Not in his abilities, but in himself. It may be hard not to be, after all, for somebody who was abandoned at birth because of his mutant eyes. Or whose eyes caused people to chase him from their doorsteps, labelling him "Le Diable Blanc", or "The White Devil". A boy who other children once handcuffed near a full-grown alligator to prove himself because he was different. Wasn't one of them.

He grew up having to prove himself over and over again, because he wasn't a part of the Guild, was never really good enough to be accepted by some of the families. Wasn't good enough to fight for when a duel ended in a dead assassin and Remy exiled from New Orleans. Not good enough to keep his own powers tamed when they grew out of control. And not good enough to realize what Mr. Sinister had in mind when he sent Remy down to the Morlock tunnels with the Marauders.

He doesn't feel that he's a good enough person. He spends his time trying to help others to prove that he is. It's one of the reasons he volunteers for the Knights of X, knowing that they might be trapped in the Otherworld. With Rogue on the main X-Men team, they were spending a lot of time apart. Enough to make him think that he was passed over for the team because of a lack in himself, something that he could prove that he could be the one out there, helping where it's needed. Because, at the end of the day, even his wedding vow to Rogue was that he would be worthy of her love and respect. He doesn't think he is.

Negative Trait: Spiteful

There are a lot of things that Remy can forgive. And has. His relationship with Bella Donna is proof of that, considering how many sparks they strike off each other. And the fact that she has definitely tried to kill him at least once.

No. What earns Remy's ire and spite is far simpler: he doesn't like being used. He will never trust Sinister as far as he can throw the man, because he used Remy to lead death to the Morlock tunnels. Sabertooth used him in a similar way, but also tried to kill him. That one is a problem for Remy because the death wouldn't have meant anything to Sabertooth. It was just another job to him. Although Remy agreed to become one of Apocalypse's Horsemen, Apocalypse turned him against his friends and family, to the point where he tried to kill Rogue. Even during Krakoa, when Apocalypse is trusted by Xavier and on the Quiet Council, Remy is very clear in his dislike and distrust of the man. Even when he's the only one who feels that way. And the chances of being friends with Magneto aren't high, thanks to Erik once using Rogue to get the truth of the Morlock Massacre out of his head. The fact that Rogue and Erik have had a thing in the past isn't great for the friendship thing, either, but that one doesn't feel personal.

And, of course, thanks to his past and the things that he's done and have been done to him? The one that Remy is most spiteful toward is himself. It's one reason why he will throw himself on the grenade every time. Because he deserves it.

Powers and Abilities:
Powers

BIOKINETIC FIELD - Remy's body produces a biokinetic field that allows him to set off a domino effect in non-living objects he's touching, causing the energy to become highly volatile and explosive on contact. In other words, he makes, "No, easily thrown objects! My one weakness!" into a thing for everyone. He can also delay an explosion for a short amount of time, but it requires a lot of concentration. The field also grants him heightened agility and creates a static interference that shields his mind from telepathic detection and intrusion. Some of the interference seems to be inherent, though, as Remy has proved resistant to mental control even when without his powers.

The larger the things Remy is charging, the longer it takes for him to bring them to the tipping point. Playing cards only take the equivalent of a match strike. Larger items, such as shirts or his trenchcoat, take a little longer and more concentrating to keep the charge from dominoing immediately. A small car, such as a Mini, would take at least an hour and would wipe him out for at least the same amount of time. He CAN do it, but he doesn't like doing it. He doesn't normally have the luxury of time enough to set something like that up.

NB: In Duplicity, Remy can only charge small items.

EMPATHY -

Remy has a low-level, close quarters empathy that is useful for helping him get a read of the room. Or a better read on the person he's with. It's come in handy with certain closed off members of the X-Men, when he's trying to figure out how far he can push something. He will, sometimes, ignore it, but it is there. It can be limited even further to touch-based empathy, but only skin to skin.

There is a secondary bit, his empathic charm, that would allow him to exert a subtle influence over sentient minds around him. It would compel them to believe what he says and agree to his suggestions. It's a power that doesn't work on people who know about it, but given the concept of Duplicity, that aspect of the power will be completely off the table.

Abilities/Physical Capabilities

Remy is a master of bōjutsu, a martial art that focuses on use of a staff as a weapon, as well as being trained in several other martial arts including savate. He's an excellent hand-to-hand combatant, putting street fighting skills and acrobatics into use. He also has some skill with a rapier. At least enough to have killed Julien Boudreaux in a duel.

The ability to throw things that find their mark every time isn't actually connected to his mutant powers. It's a skill that he practiced and perfected from his childhood, though he didn't pick up the cards as his weapon of choice until he was fifteen. He's also incredibly good with a deck of cards in general, able to make it proverbially walk and talk, as it were. He's also a master of card tricks. There's a reason the X-Men don't let him deal on poker nights.

He is a master thief, one of the best in his world. He has shown low-level hacking skills, the ability to change his accent to fit in for at least a short amount of time, and the skills to break into even Tony Stark's home to find his armors. He has also shown the ability to remember building plans and to reproduce them with the skill of an architect. He's also never met a lock he couldn't pick, so long as he has the tools, though there are always alternative ways to get through a door.

Whether it is entirely a learned skill or partly due to an unknown facet of his empathic abilities, Remy is incredibly good at reading people. A skill he often puts to use while playing poker or other games of chance.

Remy is an excellent cook, a skill he picked up at home and during his travels. He even worked as a short order cook for a time in Arizona. His specialty is apparently gumbo, but there's little he can't cook with access to a recipe and the ingredients. Though someone may have to hide the cayenne pepper. And be prepared for leftovers.

He can drive both cars and motorcycles. He has had lessons in piloting the Blackbird, but it's probably not something he would do unless it was an emergency.

Remy is fluent in English and French, both Cajun French and the standard form. He also speaks a fair amount of Japanese (though his accent is terrible), Spanish and Swahili. He also knows American Sign Language.

He's actually pretty good with children and teenagers. Some might say that it's because he's still a kid himself. At least, maturity wise.

Inventory:

Remy's three items will be his three cats: Oliver (grey), Figaro (tuxedo), and Lucifer (orange). He loves them very much.
